Taxodium distichum, commonly known as the bald cypress, is a large, deciduous conifer native to the southeastern United States, typically found in swampy or flood-prone areas along rivers and bayous. This long-lived tree can reach heights of 35 to 45 meters (115 to 150 feet) with a straight, tapering trunk that often develops distinctive, flared bases and woody “knees” that protrude from the soil or water, believed to aid in root respiration and stability. Its soft, feathery foliage consists of flat, linear leaves that turn a rich orange-brown in autumn before shedding—an unusual trait for a conifer. The bark is fibrous and reddish-brown, peeling off in thin strips. Bald cypress produces small, round cones containing seeds that are dispersed by water or wildlife. Exceptionally adaptable, it thrives in wet, poorly drained soils but also grows well in upland sites, displaying remarkable tolerance to flooding and drought. Revered for its resilience, stately beauty, and ecological importance, Taxodium distichum provides critical habitat for birds and aquatic species and is widely planted as an ornamental or reforestation tree.
